Apparently ants find it nearly impossible to cross sticky substances so petroleum jelly makes an effective barrier when put on the places where you have seen ants coming into your home.
There are other simple earth friendly ways too get rid of ants. For example, drawing chalk lines around your house and using baby powder.
To keep ants out of your house, draw chalk lines around your doorways and windowsills. Ants won't cross a chalk line.
Sprinkle a baby powder firewall on the points in your home where ants enter. Ants that are already in your house will lose their scent trail, get lost, and eventually die; ants that are trying to come into your house won't be able to go beyond your baby powder wall.
Someone has added that using lemon-scented cleaner also works as ants hate the lemony fresh smell.
